April 10, 2008 Introduction to Shaft Orbit Analysis, By Ned Endres RoMaDyn
May 8, 2008 Interpreting Vibration Spectrum & Time Waveform Patterns, By Richard Burton Rockwell Automation
April - 10, 2008
Topic: Introduction To Orbit Shape Analysis
Speaker: Ned Endres
Sponsored by: RoMaDyn
Description:
NOCVI Northern Ohio Chapter of the Vibration Institute
Meeting Announcement Meeting Date: Thursday April 10, 2008 Topic: Introduction to Orbit Shape Analysis Speaker: Ned Endres, RoMaDyn
In large turbo machinery, application of sleeve or journal style bearings is commonplace. Inherent internal clearances within these bearings results in significant relative movement between shaft journal and bearings. In these bearing applications, vibration monitoring with strictly seismic casing sensors becomes ineffective. Analysis of this relative motion of the journal within the bearing or orbit is an essential part of diagnosing machinery malfunctions. This presentation will focus on making orbit measurements, construction of orbit plots, types of orbits plots, and interpretation of orbit shapes and characteristics.
Ned Endres holds the position of Senior MDS Specialist in Cincinnati, OH. Prior to RoMaDyn, Ned worked for Bently Nevada as a Regional MDS Service Manager and Regional MDS Technical Lead. His background includes several technical positions in manufacturing industries and mechanical engineering consulting concerns. Ned has been actively involved in the field of vibration analysis and machinery diagnostics since 1980. Ned is a graduate of Michigan Technological University with a Masters of Science in Engineering Mechanics and a Bachelors of Science in Applied Physics from Michigan Tech.
RoMaDyn Corporation is an engineering principle-based global consultancy. RoMaDyn exists to promote and advance the state-of-the-art understanding of machinery behavior and machinery protection. RoMaDyn’s parent company is Bently Pressurized Bearing Corporation, which is owned by Mr. Don Bently.

Minutes March 13, 2008 Chapter Meeting
Treasurer Herb Brumbach welcomed everyone with a reminder of the success of our last meeting, which was a tour of the ArcelorMittal 84” Hot Strip Mill in Cleveland. He also thanked Chairman Bill Rinehart for coordinating the tour.
Bill stated that the Institute has a Certification Committee Meeting coming up, and if anyone had improvements or concerns for the certification, that they should bring them to his attention, or to Secretary Jeff Teter.
Herb discussed the upcoming chapter meetings, which will feature Ned Endres on April 10 presenting Introduction to Shaft Orbit Analysis and Richard Burton with Interpreting Vibration Spectrum & Time Waveform Analysis on May 8.
The Institute will be having the Annual Training & Symposium on June 23 to 26 at Colonial Williamsburg. Herb mentioned that those attending should reserve their rooms soon to ensure their choice of lodging.
Our featured speaker for the evening was Jack Field of I/O Tech discussing Savings Generated Using A Vibration Based Monitoring Program. His presentation included the following points:
Keep successes in front of management Comparison of costs for Reactive, Preventative, and Predictive Maintenance methods Cost avoidance basics and calculations Financial impact of a vibration analysis program Cost justification calculations
Respectfully submitted by Jeff Teter.
May - 08, 2008
Topic: Interpreting Vibration Spectrum & Time Waveform Patterns
Speaker: Richard A. Burton, ICM Training
Sponsored by: Rockwell Automation
Description:
NOCVI Northern Ohio Chapter of the Vibration Institute
Meeting Announcement Meeting Date: Thursday May 8, 2008 Topic: Interpreting Vibration Spectrum and Time Waveform Patterns (Understanding Motion Through Pattern Recognition) Speaker: Richard Burton, Rockwell Automation
Every Vibration Spectrum and Time Waveform (TWF) pattern can be traced back to the motion that caused the pattern. Once the analyst has an understanding of these patterns and the motions associated with them, they can therefore identify not only the part or parts that produced the vibration, but also identify exactly how the part or parts are physically moving. Through the use of six basic questions, the analyst will be able to combine all of the frequencies, patterns and motions in the vibration data together, ending up with a virtual picture of the motion within the machine.
Richard Burton has over 23 years of experience in the troubleshooting and analysis of a wide array of machinery and vibration related problems, ranging from simple route data collection up to finding and solving building resonance problems. He has held a wide array of jobs, such as pig farmer, submarine nuclear electrician and machine vibration consultant that has helped him obtain an in-depth understanding of machinery versus the vibration symptoms they produce. He has been an instructor for Rockwell Automation since January 2001, providing students with training in all of the Vibration Analysis theory and application related courses. He also performs advanced vibration analysis diagnostics and is involved in the development and updating of course material, hardware and software. He is known for his ability to simplify complex or difficult topics into easily understood ‘layman’s terms’.
Meeting Cost: $20.00 Location: Quality Inn Richfield, 4742 Brecksville Rd. (Route 21) Richfield, OH 44286
Menu: Chicken Marsala or Beef Brisket RSVP by Monday May 5, (please include your dinner selection) to Herb Brumbach. Email herb@geotronixsupply.com or Phone: 440-835-1592, Cell Phone: 440-376-5810

Minutes April 10, 2008 Chapter Meeting
Treasurer Herb Brumbach welcomed everyone with a reminder of the upcoming May 8 meeting and the Vibration Institute Symposium to be held June 23 to 26 in Williamsburg Virginia. For more information visit the Institute web site at www.vibinst.org.
Bill Rinehart gave a report regarding the Vibration Institute Certification Committee Meeting attended by Jeff Teter and himself. Bill said there was discussion at the meeting regarding some companies request to being included in the ISO exam certification. This was explained in some detail as to why other companies could not include their exams as part of the Vibration Institute ISO certification. If you would like more information on what Bill presented please contact him. You can find his contact information on the chapter web site www.nocvi.org.
Our speaker for the evening was Ned Endres of RoMaDyn talking about an Introduction to Orbit Shape Analysis. Ned started by explaining how he tried to consolidate a multi-day training class into this brief presentation. He focused on rotor dynamics and construction of an orbit plot dealing with journal style bearings. The orbit plots are based on using 2-proximity probes and speed pickup. He went on to say there are several types of orbits including direct orbits, filtered orbits, compensated orbits, absolute orbits and DC orbits. He gave example of each type along with a case study.
Many thanks go out to Ned for taking the time to address our chapter. It is always nice to have him return and spend time with us. As some of you might not know Ned Endres was one of our early chapter members and chapter vice president and eventually chairman.
Respectfully submitted by Herb Brumbach.
